LYRICS

We now have reached the village where all the church bells ring
For here was born the wisest and very holy king
So let us raise our voices and praise the Lord on high
For bringing us safely as night is drawing nigh

2. Allons, chère Marie, devers cet horloger
Come quickly, dearest Mary, we must be on our way
And find a place to stay in before the end of day
Dear sir, I now implore you, the sky’s no longer light
Have you an empty room here where we may pass the night?

You’re wasting precious time, sir, you’ve come along too late
Ma maison est trop pleine allez voir ‘autre part
My house is full to brimming, so leave now, do not wait
Passant à l’autre rue laquelle est vis-à-vis
We’ll go across the street now to find a place to stay
I see some other lodgings just down the road a way

Dear Joseph, I am weary, please give me now your arm
Je me trouve si lasse; il faut pourtant chercher”
It’s hard for me to walk and I fear I’ll come to harm
Patron des “Trois Couronnes” avez vous logement
Good master of the “Three Crowns” have you a room to rent?
Chez vous pour deux personnes? Quelque trou seulement
For we are faint and weary and night is halfway spent

I’ve only noble people who pay me a good price
I don’t take tramps and beggars, I think that will suffice
I pray you, gracious hostess, have mercy on us now
Sensible à ma tristesse, recevez-nous chez vous.
Take heed of my condition and find a room somehow

Good hostess, while I search for a place where we might stay
Please lend my weary Mary a bench where she may lay
Volontiers ma mie, Mettez vous le banc
Do rest yourself young maiden, you’ll have a bench, of course
But hurry, sir, and ask at the Magpie and White Horse.

Though Joseph is so saddened by his and Mary’s plight
He find a humble stable, despite the sombre night
It is the only refuge to shield them from the cold
Fulfilling the events the prophets had foretold
