PEACEFUL NIAGARA
Sail the Niagara River and Lake Ontario in this lyrical part-song, celebrating the lasting peace between neighbor nations. The high point of this work serves as a tribute to US and Canadian heroes of the War of 1812.
LYRICS
Peaceful is old Lake Ontario
calm does Niagara flow
where hostile ships were sailing
so many years ago
Peaceful the banks at the riverside
this day compared with then
now clothed with the coming harvest
then bristling with brave armed men
And peaceful lie the heroes
who sleep on either shore
who nobly fought for country
here in the days of yore
But the strife is long forgotten
and the battles long are o’er
God grant that these great nations
may go to war no more.
God grant that these great nations
in peace may live alway
as calm and serene
as river and lake today
Peaceful is old Lake Ontario
calm does Niagara flow
poem by John Macdonald (1882)
