Harry Somers (b. 1925)

In a career spanning nearly five decades, Harry Somers has become one of Canada’s internationally-respected composers.

Born in Toronto, he began his early studies in piano and composition with Reginald Godden, Weldon Hilburn, and John Weinzweig. In 1949, he was awarded a Canadian Amateur Hockey Association scholarship which enabled him to study for a year (1949-1950) in Paris with Darius Milhaud.

He has written extensively for opera, ballet, stage, film, television, orchestra, soloists with orchestra, chamber music, chorus, solo voice, and piano.

In 1972, he was made a Companion of the Order of Canada.

Dr. Somers is an associate of the Canadian Music Centre, and a founding member of the Canadian League of Composers
