Night Prayer
by David Harrison
SATB a cappella – CP 1274 – duration 3:55
“Night Prayer” is a prayer for Compline, the late evening prayer service of the Church. Found in A New Zealand Prayer Book He Karakia Mihinare o Aotearoa, the Anglican prayer book of New Zealand, it has caught on internationally. It was written in 1987 by the Reverend John Williamson, who wrote it to end the meeting of the Prayer Book Revision Committee. A humble man, he then threw it in the garbage but others, realizing its power, rescued the piece of paper from the garbage can and included it in the new prayer book. This a cappella setting evokes the quietness of the late evening, the relinquishing of tasks done and undone, and the expectation of the morn.
