Born in Montreal, Canada, Lorraine Hétu Manifold is a choral conductor, composer, singing teacher and vocal pedagogue whose musical life has taken her around the world. She has lived in Canada, Belgium, Israel, Hungary, the United States and Australia, before immigrating to Australia in 2012. While she will always cherish the memories of her life in Canada and the many places she has called home, Lorraine is now delighted to live in the warm beach town of Yeppoon in Central Queensland, where she can enjoy a life free from minus temperatures and snow.

A passionate choral singer herself, Lorraine has performed with Les Chœurs de l’Union Européenne in Brussels and toured with the Voices of Bahá throughout Europe, the Caribbean and India, including a treasured performance at Carnegie Hall.

Lorraine is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Capricorn Chorale, the first auditioned classical choir in regional Queensland. She was also the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of the Australian Bahá’í Choral Festival, which brought together singers from across Australia and around the world to sing several years in a row until Covid hit. She is also President of the Australian National Choral Association (ANCA), the national peak body representing the Australian choral sector. Previously, she was Co-Founder and Director of Perfect Chord in Melbourne.

As a composer and arranger, Lorraine is inspired by poetry, spirituality and the expressive and transformative possibilities of the human voice. Her choral works have been performed by ensembles across Australia and internationally. La Beauté du Véritable was performed at the 60th Anniversary celebration of the European Bahá’í Temple in Frankfurt, Germany, and was also chosen to be sung at the Canadian Experimental Choir’s Podium 2026.

Lorraine holds a Master’s degree in Vocal Pedagogy from Northeastern Illinois University, a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Music from the University of Ottawa, and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Vesalius College in Brussels. Her work as a conductor, educator, clinician, adjudicator and composer reflects a lifelong commitment to bringing people together through the power and beauty of choral music.

La Beauté du Véritable was born from a deeply personal response to the words of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá and Bahá’u’lláh. Throughout my life, I have been saddened by the way many societies place such importance on a women’s outward appearance, sometimes valuing beauty and youth above women’s accomplishments, abilities and the beauty of their inner character.

The words of this song brings me great comfort. They offer a profound reminder that the qualities that truly matter are not those that diminish with time, but those that endure: our spiritual qualities, our character, our capacity to love, and the contribution we make to the world. The words also encourage us to recognise the nobility and richness within ourselves rather than pursuing that which is transient.

I hope La Beauté du Véritable will offer others the same comfort these words have given me, and perhaps encourage us to look beyond outward appearances and create societies that see all people, and particularly women, as dignified human beings and respect them deeply for the beauty of their character, their accomplishments and their unique contributions to the world.
