MATTHEW PAULS
Matthew Pauls, a prairie boy at heart, is an Assistant Professor of Music at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) in Winnipeg, where he enjoys the challenges of the university classroom and rehearsal space. He teaches voice, aural skills, and has conducts one of the choral ensembles – CMU Voices (TB). A graduate of CMU, Matthew went on to earn his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Western Ontario, where his doctoral research focused on Argentine Art Song.
Matthew has spent many years singing a wide range of repertoire with ensembles such as the CMU Singers, Winnipeg Singers, Pro Coro Canada, the Saskatoon Chamber Singers, AYUVE, and the Canadian Chamber Choir. He has appeared as a soloist with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Windsor Symphony Orchestra, Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional del Paraguay, and other ensembles across Canada such as the Guelph Chamber Choir, Windsor Classic Chorale, Rosthern Station Singers, SummerChör (Winnipeg), and the Mennonite Festival Chorus (Winnipeg).
As an arranger, Matthew draws on his experience as a performer, educator, and conductor. His music is marked by lyricism and clarity, and embraces the beauty of the human voice, both in unison and harmony. When he’s not shaping phrases or shaping young minds, you’ll likely find him enjoying great coffee, good friends, and a variety of board game.
