MAXIME FILLION
An Ottawa native, Maxime Fillion is an educator, choral conductor, pianist, and composer. He completed his studies in composition and music theory at McGill University, where he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. During his time at McGill, he studied under renowned composers such as Brian Cherney, John Rea, Melissa Hui, and Philippe Leroux. He currently teaches at De La Salle High School, in Ottawa.

This folk song, which originates from Auvergne (France), is a bourrée dance. Popular in both France and French-Canada, I first encountered this action-song by listening to Carmen Campagne as a young child. This tune of hers in particular stuck with me over the years. Perhaps I am drawn by its hypnotic repetitiveness, which mimics the motion of a spinning wheel. Or perhaps I am attracted by the stark contrast of the tune itself which is simultaneously dark and danceable. This particular arrangement uses a piano-driven theme-and-variations approach (à la Patriquin), as well as basic ostinatos to drive the momentum forward.
