Monarch Butterfly
by Katy Dosman
SSA with piano – CP 2371 – 3:00
How can a Canadian-born insect fly across the United States and into Mexico, locating the forests visited by its ancestors? How does it find its way? The migration of the Monarch is equally impressive and mysterious. This piece is a love-letter to the Monarch. In addition to admiring its surprising strength and innate ‘GPS’, the narrator of the piece expresses a sincere wish for the Monarch to return each summer, always. It is an expression of admiration, friendship, and commitment to nature, in a time when many species, including the Monarch, are threatened by climate change and habitat loss. Butterfly motifs in the piano and vocal parts allow the musicians to ‘be’ butterflies. The piece is structured in AABA form, in a range easily accessible to most treble voices. The piece concludes on a strong note of appreciation, optimism, hope.
