Mary Rose-Anna Bolduc, née Travers, was a singer of French Canadian musician. She was known as Madame Bolduc or La Bolduc. During the peak of her popularity in the 1930s, she was known as the Queen of Canadian Folksingers. Jean-Charles has given a very convincing rendition of a Canadian classic.

À force de me priver d’manger, j’ai l’estomac ratatiné.

translation

My friends I assure you that times are tough
But take heart, things are looking up
There will be work for everyone this winter
At least give a chance to the new government

There are hard times in store Ah! But don’t get discouraged
My heart is always light and I continue to sing!

We’re complaining in Montreal but in the end we’re not so badly off
In the province of Quebec we eat with water our stale bread
There’s no work in Canada, still less in the States
Don’t try to go farther abroad, or it’s sure that you’ll starve

It’s expensive these days to feed ourselves on credit
And so that the grocery bill doesn’t go up too high I eat lots of crackers
But I can’t make any extra money, my husband is out of work
My stomach is shrinking from being deprived of eating

So here I am in a sorry state, I’ve got holes in my shoes
My heels stick out the bottoms and the ends fold upwards
The tops are torn, the linings have come apart
My toes stick out but it’s still better than not having any shoes at all

The landlord who rents to me is in trouble
All the coal in my coal box is gone and I’ve got five broken windows
My lights have been disconnected and my water bill is unpaid
But they don’t need to come and bother me,
I’ll just throw them back down the stairs
