Born in 1934 in Illinois, James Neff completed his elementary and secondary schooling there. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Music degree from Concordia College – Moorhead, Minnesota in 1956, In the same year, he married the love-of-his-life, Jo Ann. In 1958, he received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Denver. Following that were graduate studies at the University of Iowa. James taught 3 years of Senior High School music in the U.S. In 1959 the family moved to Camrose, Alberta where he taught music theory, history, composition and conducting at Camrose Lutheran College, Augustana University College and the University of Alberta – Augustana campus. After 32 years in this position, James retired in 1993.

The choral work “How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place” was written for the dedication of the then-new Bethel Lutheran Church in Camrose, Alberta. It has been performed across Canada and in the United States. This choral work is also included in 2 CD albums by the University of Alberta Augustana choirs
