MAXIME FILLION
An Ottawa native, Maxime Fillion is an educator, choral conductor, pianist, and composer. He completed his studies in composition and music theory at McGill University, where he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. During his time at McGill, he studied under renowned composers such as Brian Cherney, John Rea, Melissa Hui, and Philippe Leroux. He currently teaches at De La Salle High School, in Ottawa.
As a composer, he was awarded a SOCAN Foundation Prize for his electroacoustic work Tout un chacun, based on a poem by Gaston Miron. Additionally, he received a federal SSHRC scholarship, which supported his Master’s thesis research on the music of American jazz pianist Brad Mehldau.
Maxime discovered his passion for teaching through several years of private piano instruction and work at various music schools in Ottawa and Montreal. Since 2023, he has been a faculty member at the Centre d’excellence artistique de l’Ontario (CEAO). His choirs consistently distinguish themselves at the local and provincial levels; notably, his students have performed at Parliament and secured first place in the provincial Ontario Music Festivals Association competition.
As a choral arranger, Maxime is primarily interested in promoting French and French-Canadian folklore by writing striking yet accessible arrangements for youth choruses.
