Home 9 Composers 9 CHRIS DOUGHTY

Originally hailing from Wales, Chris Doughty has made his home in Vancouver BC. He sings Baritone with the Vancouver Cantata Singers (one of Canada’s finest choirs) and has also sung in the chorus for popular shows such as Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy. He began his musical career as a classically-trained pianist and started composing and arranging music almost as soon as he started learning to play an instrument.

He sang in multiple youth choirs and ensembles in Wales and England before he came to Canada to study as a young adult, eventually embarking on a career in environmental science but continuing to pursue music with passion whenever possible. Beyond the piano and choral world, he also now dabbles in synthesizers, arrangement and music production, especially in the video game music tribute scene. He previously played keyboards and sang with Vancouver video game mega-medley band The Runaway Four, including performing on the main stage at the largest music festival dedicated to the genre, MAGFest, in National Harbor, Maryland.

Chris continues to arrange and perform tributes to classic and modern video game music under the pseudonym “angrypolarbear”, contributing to numerous collaborative recording projects and as a member of several “long-distance” bands with musicians from around North America the world, performing at every opportunity that comes his way and composing original music when he can.”

Empyrean: Wonder of the Sky

by Chris Doughty

SSAATTBB a cappella –  CP 2570   – duration 6:40

Empyrean: Wonder of the Sky tells the story of a wonderful evening watching a meteor shower in northern British Columbia, contemplating the vastness of space and the briefness of human existence. Space is big, and we are very young. On the grand scale of the universe we are impossibly tiny, and we have existed for only the blink of an eye – and that’s ok. The realization ought to humble us, but it should not diminish anything that we decide, or anything that we achieve. It should serve only to provide wonder and amazement, and to make us aware that we are part of something greater than ourselves.

The setting sun vacates the sky
The clouds recede, so stars may fly
The noise of life begins to quietly depart
The moon is new, the sky is dark
When suddenly there streaks a spark
A speck of dust, its blaze more glorious than its start
Lying in silence, side by side
Unfocused eyes, hearts open wide
