I was born in Chile in 1935 and raised in an English speaking household. While in Chile, I was exposed to the intense public popularity of local songs and music. The one and only instrument I began to play at the time was the mouth organ. I remember performing before audiences at YMCA summer camps. Once in Canada and in the early 1950’s my life was filled with obtaining an education at UBC and later with raising a family and teaching geography courses in Vancouver at Langara College. During those years,  I practiced the harmonica from time to time and occasionally performed at faculty entertainment evenings. I also composed a few songs, one of which is titled “Vancouver, I Am On My Way”. This song was inspired by my unbridled affection for Vancouver.

Vancouver Song

by Richard Reiner

SATB with piano – CP 24284 – duration 3:35
Songs about amazing cities: I Left My Heart in San Francisco; New York, New York; London Calling; April in Paris; Viva Las Vegas, Walking in Memphis; Chattanooga Choo Choo; El Paso; etc.  So, why not a song about the most beautiful city of them all? Vancouver! (spoken with typical Canadian humility)

Strolling along in Stanley Park
Resting by Siwash Rock
I’ll watch a flock of seagulls fly
And hear the mournful cry

Vancouver by the sea
That’s where I long to be
Let me just say – I’m on my way
Coming to stay

Vancouver, Vancouver

Beautiful city by the sea
Vancouver
