Lux æterna

by Justin Lapierre

SATB a cappella – CP 2338 – duration 5:15

This composition honours the victims of the 2017 Quebec City mosque shooting, where six victims were killed during prayers by a xenophobic perpetrator—it remains the deadliest attack in a house of worship ever to occur on Canadian soil. This piece addresses rising Islamophobia in French Canada through the interplay of poetry by Rumi translated into French and the Christian Lux æterna, illustrating the shared spiritual themes and traditions of Islam and Christianity which can both trace their roots back to the prophet Abraham.

This piece was selected by Dr. Jean-Sébastien Vallée for his Cypress series. The Toronto Mendelssohn Collection
